Seven Tools for Innovation
Innovation is for all: Learn the seven most impactful innovation tools

What you will learn

Overview

Innovation in companies is often seen as something only a select few are able to do and should be involved in. Innovation is traditionally left to R&D, product development or those thought to have a creative mind-set. It is seen as a “dark art” that only certain people can understand and apply. Contrary to this belief, experience shows that in fact everyone in an organization can and should contribute to innovation, and that, most importantly, innovation can easily be taught, deployed and reliably applied to create new sources of revenue.

Granted, “creating an innovation mind-set” to kick-start major transformations and drive growth is not easy. Companies need a holistic approach that involves the entire organization and the right foundations and framework. To gain the best results, they also need to train key business and transformation leaders on what innovation is in general, on the tools and how to apply them, and on leading the change that goes along with the innovation journey.

This unique two-day innovation course focuses on the “enabling people” building block of this journey in order to unlock the creative potential of everyone within your business—from technical experts to senior business leaders. The content of the class is designed to give anyone solving complex business problems and aspiring to drive new ideas the right ways of working forward. In other words, you’ll gain the basic innovation toolkit needed to gain fast and impactful results.

Following an analysis of your own unique creative style along a solidly researched theory, participants will learn how to practically apply the following seven innovation tools to any business problem:

  • Job to be Done / Outcome Expectations
  • Value Quotient / Ideal Final Result
  • Resource Optimization
  • Random Stimulus
  • Six Modes of Thinking
  • Brainwriting
  • Scamper

Through teaching these seven basic innovation tools and how to apply them within Rapid Innovation Events (RIEs), this course will enable any individual or business to unleash the creative potential of all employees. These seven tools are so impactful because they are relatively easy to learn and apply, they can be used in a wide range of different problem solving methodologies, and they are proven to drive breakthrough results.

Through the skills acquired, you’ll be able to not only unleash your own individual creative potential, but also inspire a mind-set that is more focused on innovation across your own business operations—on new streams of revenue, novel approaches to run the business and opportunities as they emerge in daily business.

Applying these tools is ludic and fun. They can also fundamentally change the way people work together. Familiarizing your employees with such approaches helps make everyone in your organization more receptive to an innovation mind-set.

Learning Objectives

After engaging in this two-day event, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the critical importance of companies addressing "innovation".
  • Know their own problem-solving style, read other people’s styles and take advantage of the diversity in styles.
  • Apply the seven innovation tools in daily business and in your company’s problem solving methodologies.
  • Work in teams in a unique and new way that boosts people’s creativity.
  • Inspire others in the organization to innovate through the use and application of the seven innovation tools.

How you will learn

Classroom

To prepare for the course and gain a sense of urgency for innovation, participants will be asked to attempt to solve some complex business problems and challenges, using just their prior experiences and knowledge. To demonstrate the application of the seven tools and to embed the skills, participants will retry these business challenges as part of a competition at the end of course—you will find there will be marked improvement in just two days!

Through both the theory and the classroom-based application, participants will learn about success and failure in innovation in order to better understand the importance and opportunity for application of the seven tools within their business.

Tool by tool, the training delivers a “wow experience” as each one of the seven tools is powerful, easy to apply to any problem and will enthuse participants. Given these tools are also based on the very nature of how people solve problems, participants will learn about the foundations and the application of the Kirton Adaption–Innovation Theory (KAI). They will also learn to understand their own style when solving problems and to read other people’s styles so they can best use team diversity. For each tool, participants will see relevant examples and will practice it in teams.

Team members will gain knowledge through these sources of learning:

  • Instructor expertise in linking innovation tools and theory with real-world application
  • Video and discussion exploring ideas presented
  • Team and individual exercises, and debriefing of the exercises across all groups
  • Discussions with fellow class attendees
