Train-the-Trainer
Become the best instructor you can be

What you will learn

Overview

There’s more to teaching than knowing your subject matter. You have to know your students and how they learn as adults. You have to understand group dynamics and manage interactions. You have to prepare your material and visual aids, and you have to deliver your sessions in a way that creates profound experiences for your students.

BMGI’s Train-the-Trainer course is an intensive skill-building experience that teaches attendees how to become better instructors, presenters, meeting leaders, mentors and coaches. Attendees learn the practices, behaviors and tools they need to improve audience participation, buy-in, comprehension, retention and application.

Definitely the best practically applicable course I have ever attended.

Specifically, attendees learn how to plan and organize their materials, including openers and closers, curriculum “shaping” methods and visual aids. You’ll be exposed to a variety of experiential learning principles that you can use to increase your teaching effectiveness. And you’ll delve into the specifics of the adult learning cycle and different learning styles.

Finally, a good portion of the course is dedicated to developing and practicing your own voice, or delivery style, under planned as well as impromptu circumstances. This portion of the course is reinforced with feedback and observations from other course attendees and expert coaching from a BMGI master trainer.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the adult learning cycle.
  • Identify and appeal to four learning styles and seven types of “smarts.”
  • Improve their training skills by preparing three video-taped practice sessions.
  • Apply experiential learning principles to make facilitating/training more engaging and effective.
  • Understand Hierarchical (lecture), Co-operative (activities) and Autonomous (reflection) training modes.
  • Identify behaviors that contribute to confident presentations/facilitations.
  • Set the scene using powerful openers and closers.
  • Apply several curriculum “shaping” methods to improve participation and comprehension.
  • Effectively deal with difficult audience/team members.
  • Develop effective visual aids.
  • Plan and organize training materials so sessions flow seamlessly from start to finish and knowledge retention is maximized.

How you will learn

Classroom

Like all BMGI courses, this course has a firm grounding in theory, an emphasis on transferring needed knowledge and, most of all, a focus on practice, application and demonstrated competency. You’ll learn by doing as you engage in interactive class activities, complete daily homework assignments and practice presenting.

Although intense, this course is delivered in a safe, fun and supportive environment. You’ll practice delivery three times, including a five-minute impromptu training (to establish your baseline style) and two longer, planned trainings (10 and 20 minutes) that allow you to apply the knowledge and techniques you’ve learned in class.*

You’ll learn experientially in this course, just as you’ll teach this way after you graduate. You’ll also learn in an exacting manner, as your master instructor gives you structured and detailed feedback on your practice training sessions. Of course, your instructor will consider your unique style and personality when helping you refine your abilities.

* Portions of these sessions are video-taped so students and instructors can assess delivery style and have a record for further study.
