Using DMAIC to Reduce Hospital Insurance Claim Denials and Write-Offs -- Case Study
A 917-bed, non-profit hospital system that employs more than 5,600 people has a very high percentage of insurance claims that were denied due to incorrect patient demographic information. Using various Six Sigma tools, out of 386 charts audited 78.2 percent of the denials were due to the presence of incorrect demographic information, with almost half due to inaccurate insurance information.
After implementing a new process and training programs, the hospital has reduced outpatient claim denials and write-offs to the order of about $350,000 per year, and the number of man hours required to fix claim errors has been reduced by 62 percent.View Complete Case Study
