Experience: A Lesson in Disguise Print Story
In all of life, reading or hearing about something is never as powerful as experiencing it for yourself. How much better do you understand geography after you’ve traveled somewhere on your own? And do you think you could ever learn to ski simply by watching a video? Only when you are out on the slopes can you fully grasp the meaning of planting a pole or putting all of your weight on your uphill foot.
In its most simple form, this is the essence of experiential learning, or learning by doing. Back in the 5th century BC, Confucius recognized the effectiveness of experiential learning when he said "I hear, I know. I see, I remember. I do, I understand." |
| Since then, many philosophers, psychologists, sociologists and educators have touted the merits of learning by experience. Read story... |
Learning by Doing, the DMAIC Way Print Story
As Black Belt Angi Jennings learned, applying DMAIC tools in the classroom is a piece of cake compared to the first time you try to use the tools to solve an actual problem.
On her first Six Sigma project for BayCare Health System, Jennings was faced with 16,000 data points, and a team that was new to Six Sigma. This presented an opportunity for everyone to learn experientially. |

Jennings learned about managing change, and how to apply ANOVA and regression analysis to narrow down a huge data set. Her team experienced firsthand the effectiveness of Six Sigma, and how to use DMAIC tools to affect positive change.
Jennings was assigned a DMAIC project for St. Anthony’s Hospital, one of nine hospitals in the BayCare Health System in Tampa Bay, Florida. In addition to the facility’s 20-bed ICU, St. Anthony’s has a 10-bed cardiovascular ICU. The project goal was to reduce the number of ventilator days in both ICUs by 30 percent. A secondary goal was to reduce the overall length of stay in the ICU for vented patients. Read story...

Seven Smarts are Better than One Print Story

If you were disappointed in your IQ or SAT scores, take heart. These tests, although revered by the general community as measures of intelligence, may not provide a complete picture of how smart you are.
In fact, if you’re not linguistically talented, skilled at math, or able to commit obscure facts to memory, you may not perform very well on these traditional tests. But that doesn't mean you aren't smart. |
In 1983, Dr. Howard Gardner, a professor at Harvard Graduate School of Education, proposed the revolutionary “Theory of Multiple Intelligences” in his book Frames of Mind. Gardner's theory is that we all exhibit, to some degree, seven different types of intelligence including linguistic, mathematical, musical, spatial, kinesthetic, interpersonal and intrapersonal.
