Increasing On-Time Starts for First Case Surgeries

Overview

BayCare Health System’s Mease Dunedin Hospital experienced a 28-percent rise in the number of surgeries not started on time. Since such delays can add up and cause backlogs, schedule conflicts and overtime, a team set out to solve the problem. Using various tools like a Cause & Effect Matrix, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and Pareto Chart, the team narrowed the root causes of the problem down to the few that mattered most. Then the team implemented several countermeasures to solve the problem, and on-time surgeries improved by 20 percent.
